Undoubtedly-after the club-the axe is man's second oldest weapon. It didn't take one long to find out that a trusty club could be readily and mightily improved by adding a sharpened stone to the business end, creating a weapon that could not only crush but cut! A few hard strokes with a stone axe could fell a good sized tree. You can imagine what effect it had when our forebears wielded it with the strength born of terror against two and four legged foes! In fact, it proved so effective in individual fights and mass battles, that it endured throughout the ages. It was used throughout antiquity from Egypt through the Fall of Rome. The Vikings found it practical and it remained in use through the Renaissance. Even the invention of gun powder didn't stifle the axe and it continued to be employed as a naval boarding weapon right up to World War I. At Special Projects we have long bemoaned the fact that no full sized fighting axes were available. Sure, you could buy cheap junk from India, beaten out on a rock, but it couldn't be relied on in a fight. Something had to be done about this deplorable situation, so we made our modern version based on the Viking pattern first used in our Norse Hawk. The head of our new Battle Axe weighs a little over 11/2 lbs and when fully assembled it tips the scales at 22/3 lbs. For toughness, it is drop forged out of 5150 steel and differentially heat treated. The cutting edge is a generous 51/2" long and terminates in two sharp points so it shares the same slashing, ripping, gouging and stabbing potential of the smaller, Norse Hawk. Since we wanted our Battle Axe to be easily wielded with two hands, we have kept its weight down and borrowed the 30" hickory handle and steel langets that appear on our War Hammer. With these items properly installed and the edge honed to razor sharpness, our Battle Axe will rival the finest weapons of old. It can easily decapitate an enemy or sever an arm or leg with a single blow and in a pinch, serve to fell a tree or cut firewood as well. (Some assembly is required. Instructions are included).
