Designed by Alaskan guide Russ Kommer, the perfect skinning knife and game knife for fish, fowl and caping.
In the Alaskan north, the Inuit word for wolverine is Carcajou, and caribou is Cobuk. Those seemed like the right names to Alaskan guide and custom knifemaker Russ Kommer for our new skinning and game knives. They bring a new level of sophistication to outdoor sporting fixed blades.
The Carcajou can be used with confidence in slippery skinning and cleaning action, such as cleaning fish and birds, caping, and other precision tasks. The friction grooves near the blade tip allow use of a pencil grip for delicate caping around ears, antlers, nose and lips. Russ Kommer finds it to be the fastest way to remove the blood groove from salmon: just make a fast slit on either side of the blood groove and use one stroke of the pommel ring to scrape it away as you would with a spoon.
The little finger ring also allows you to let either knife drop and swing from your finger while you use your hands, and then with a wrist flip, bring the knife back up into your hand, so it never falls in the dirt or the creek.
Construction features include a full tang AUS 6M stainless steel blade in bright satin finish with a Razor-Sharp cutting edge, sandwiched between contoured and textured Zytel® scales attached with premium Torx® fasteners. They are almost indestructible, solvent resistant, and even removable for cleaning. Lightening holes minimize weight. To aid grip and tactile awareness, there are ample friction grooves on both knives.
Finally, we designed custom polycarbonate sheath systems. They are rigid, so the blade tip will not cut through, as sometimes happens with leather sheaths. The belt clip is designed for maximum security on belts or webbing up to 2 in. wide. A large large weep hole drains moisture.
We won\'t say they are breakthroughs on the order of GoreTex® or GPS, but we will say they are the most advanced specialized fixed blades we know of.

About Columbia River
Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) is a Wilsonville, Oregon-based manufacturer of quality knives and tools founded in 1994. The Columbia River Knife catalog has grown and is divided into two categories, Sport and Work Knives, intended for the general public; and Professional Knives, designed for the military, law enforcement, fire department, search and rescue and other emergency services personnel.
Founders, Rod Bremer and Paul Gillespie commented on the Columbia River Knife & Tool's rapid growth in the highly competitive cutlery industry: "We began with the vision of offering top quality knives at affordable prices to give the highest possible value," said Gillespie. Fortunately, because we were starting with a blank sheet of paper, we could make the new designs we wanted from the optimum materials, using the latest high tech manufacturing processes, including CNC machining, injection molding and fine blanking.
Before packing and shipping each Columbia River Knife & Tool knife, it is inspected for defects in materials and workmanship, the lock and cutting edge are checked, it is opened and closed to assure smoothness of action, and it is lubricated and adjusted if needed.
All Columbia River Knife & Tool knives are built incorporating the most advanced equipment and production systems available, and quality is controlled from beginning to end. Knives are built the way they should be built without compromising quality in any part of their creation. Columbia River Knife & Tool accessories are crafted to the same standards as the knives, so that each sheath, for example, lives up to the customers high expectations.
