After Russ Kommer makes a new knife, he takes it on the next hunting trip he guides and uses it on the heavy skinning of Alaskan moose, caribou and bear. If it works right, feels right, and holds its edge, Russ has another design in his book. If it doesn’t, he takes it to his workshop and destroys it. The new Signature Hunters started as Kommer customs and survived his field test. That’s good enough for Columbia River.
Named after Alaska mountain ranges, the Signature Hunters are simple classic fixed blades, with a full tang blade of 1.4116 stainless steel, high hollow ground and mirror polished to minimize staining and corrosion and to give less resistance while skinning.
Each blade has friction grooves on the spine and its deep finger choil, giving grip and control under the slipperiest conditions.
The dark stained exotic wood scales feature Russ’s unique diagonal split, which also provides additional finger gripping edges. Scales are riveted in place with classic stainless steel rivets. Each knife has a slot at the butt and a hand tied leather fob.
The Kilbuck Signature Hunter is a classic drop point hunter with friction grooves near the tip for maximum control. This is a favorite of CRKT as a skinner and camp general purpose knife.
The Kuskokwin Signature Skinner is a full-bellied skinner with a gut hook. When you have big animals to dress out, this is the knife to take along.
The Kaiyuh Signature Hunter is designed for those who prefer an upswept clip point for skinning and camp tasks.
Each Signature Hunter comes with a fitted leather sheath. Like the finest custom sheaths, they are made from a single piece of 7 to 8 ounce leather. They are tooled and perimeter stitched with burnished edges.
As a guide, and as an Alaskan, Russ Kommer is a no-nonsense guy who designs simple, functional knives. He uses his knives on every trip he guides, and the faster he can skin and dress the game, the more hunting time his party can get in. It’s that simple. That Kommer knives are also graceful and well balanced is almost incidental. That CRKT can deliver these knives at such affordable prices is a bonus to every serious hunter.

About Columbia River
Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT) is a Wilsonville, Oregon-based manufacturer of quality knives and tools founded in 1994. The Columbia River Knife catalog has grown and is divided into two categories, Sport and Work Knives, intended for the general public; and Professional Knives, designed for the military, law enforcement, fire department, search and rescue and other emergency services personnel.
Founders, Rod Bremer and Paul Gillespie commented on the Columbia River Knife & Tool's rapid growth in the highly competitive cutlery industry: "We began with the vision of offering top quality knives at affordable prices to give the highest possible value," said Gillespie. Fortunately, because we were starting with a blank sheet of paper, we could make the new designs we wanted from the optimum materials, using the latest high tech manufacturing processes, including CNC machining, injection molding and fine blanking.
Before packing and shipping each Columbia River Knife & Tool knife, it is inspected for defects in materials and workmanship, the lock and cutting edge are checked, it is opened and closed to assure smoothness of action, and it is lubricated and adjusted if needed.
All Columbia River Knife & Tool knives are built incorporating the most advanced equipment and production systems available, and quality is controlled from beginning to end. Knives are built the way they should be built without compromising quality in any part of their creation. Columbia River Knife & Tool accessories are crafted to the same standards as the knives, so that each sheath, for example, lives up to the customers high expectations.
